Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration (9)

I created this image for my one of my art classes because I believe that Racism is still a very sensitive and large social problem in the United States and World.

We view each other as different whether it is our hair color, eye color, facial structure, skin color or anything else because we are all different; even identical twins are different to some degree because of the foods they eat, where and how they, and all of us, are raised. Noting all of that how can we judge each other for those differences? That's exactly what racism is. I chose this chapter because I believe that racism is illogical and needs to be stopped because despite the fact that we think it is coming to an end it it still one of our biggest social problems.

 Video:
This video is about a sociologist who started collecting racist black memorabilia and created a museum dedicated to it to teach people about what the images mean.

Article:
This article is about the immigration laws that states are starting to pass and who it is creating a new era of Jim Crow segregation. I choose this article because I believe that the new laws about illegal immigration is destroying everything we believe in as a nation and creating more problems then they think they are solving.

Websites:
This website is a government website that gives all the laws, regulations and information on immigration.

This website is information on what the United Nations is trying to do to stop racism and intolerance throughout the world. It also has some links to the UN's resolutions, conventions and declarations that is their commitment to equality and human dignity.

Problems in Education (8)

Education is one of the most important tools for survival in the world today and yet in the United States it is one of the most overlooked areas in our social system. Yes people complain about it and think about how bad the education system is and want changes done but at the same time don't care enough to put a foot forward and do something about it. One saying that comes to mind when thinking about education is a bit crude but to the point in my eyes, " Money walks and bullshit talks." Pulling from the urban dictionary as to what that means it is basically saying that you can talk all you want about what you believe needs to be done but it is money that actually makes those things happen. Lets look at an example, if people, teachers, are under valued, under paid and have hardly any resources to do their jobs not to mention massive amounts of bureaucratic tape to rip through the job isn't going to get done because they aren't going to care. It is a rare individual that is going to push with all their might to get things done such as Erin Gruwell, the teacher that inspired the movie Freedom Writers.

Video:
This video is a CNN news report about the failing education system in the United States and how, as the time goes on, under educated people are going to be fighting for jobs because there won't be enough jobs for them in the 21st century. To work in the work force in the next 5 to 50 years people are going to have to have a higher education and it is a massive problem getting people to realize that. What can our society, our social system do to help educate people. Where is the common sense?

Article:
In the abstract of this article it states, "education has turned to treating children as commodities rather than helping them to develop not only their intellect but also their emotional and social selves," which to me explains how this country has come to view education. It is seen

Websites:

This website is actually a teachers magazine and there are lots of good information in it that can help with the education of educators.

This site is termed a useful "toolkit of materials and activities suitable for integration into a variety of educational settings." It has many resources for education but may not necessarily help us understand the lack of education within our nation and the world.
